2002 Fall Work Day
In the fall of 2002 our chapter held a work day. The goal was to
continue our efforts that started in a previous year related to the
construction and maintenance of log crossings. The purpose of the log
crossings is to provide foot passage over muddy/silty areas that drain
directly into the Nissitissit River. The areas are regularly crossed
by hikers and fishermen throughout the warmer parts of the year.
Without the log crossings there has been an increased tendancy for
erosion and siltation through the drainage ways into the river. By
utilizing locally blown down logs from the upland areas or logs
removed from log jams the chapter has been able to construct
a number of these crossings. Since the crossings are built using
biodegradable materials, it is necessary to provide a small amount
of maintenance each year. In addition, constructed crossings are
not permanent structures and shift during periods of higher flows.
The pictures below (provided by John Donnenwirth) show the crew
involved in the construction of one of our typical crossings.
